Long burning hardwoods: Denser, burns hotter and longer, and are generally better for fireplaces and wood stoves. Examples include Blue Gum (extremely invasive), Kameeldoring and Mopane. Hardwoods can be quite difficult to ignite, so when used in open fireplaces, you may want to burn it with a softer wood like Black Wattle (extremely invasive) to achieve a nicer flame. Sekelbos is an invasive hardwood that burns hot and produces a lot of coals, making it ideal for braaing over an open flame. Sekelbos is also known for its unique flavor profile. The wood imparts a distinct smoky flavor to the food, adding depth and complexity to the taste. Another popular braai wood is Kameeldoring. Once the fire is going, kameeldoring burns slowly and steadily, providing a long-lasting source of heat. The wood also imparts a unique and pleasant flavor to the food.

Medium-hardwood and Softwoods: Lighter, burns faster and with more smoke, and are better for starting fires or in areas where you need a quick burn. Examples include Black Wattle (medium-hardwood with excellent burning properties). If you are looking for a firewood that produces a nice flame, consider burning black wattle in combination with hardwoods like blue gum, sekelbos or kameeldoring. This will help balance out the burning properties and provide a great fire experience.

How to stack firewood correctly

Start by laying two large logs at the bottom of your fireplace. Stack kindling sticks in two or three layers, reaching up to the secondary air holes. Place two or three firelighters just beneath the top layer of kindling. Finally, add a medium-sized log on top. Light the firelighters, and as long as the airflow is good, you can close the door and let the fire do the rest.
